After our community tragedy last week and being a part of the viewing, I felt God was reinforcing why He has given me this opportunity to use my camera. One common thread in this tragedy was pictures. As humans, we are naturally attracted to images. Think for a moment every picture or image that you have looked at today. Anything on facebook, on a website, on a wall, in your home, in an album, on your computer screen all have the same commonality; they are all images that you can see. They are people. Real human beings that have feelings, emotions, and needs. They all change and grow.
As I watched slideshow after slideshow and saw images on facebook and websites, I thought to myself that this is one thing (the only thing) that these parents have left. Those are their final memories. They will cherish each one for the rest of their lives.
Often times we make excuses like: We are too busy, we have to get matching clothes, we need to wait until her teeth are straight, we don't have any extra money, It's too cold, he is too little, she is teething, my husband hates pictures...
Believe me, I know these are true because I have done and said the same things. When Juliana (my 13 yr old) was little, I had made this picture thing important. When Sav came along, it was cute to dress them alike. But then Ben came and it got harder. Harder to plan and organize. I over thought the process and tried to make timing perfect. Poor Addy, well let me just admit that I have just a handful of pictures of her from age newborn-four. Seriously! Then I found my passion for photography.
Now I am on a quest. A journey to help others capture those moments that in one instant can be gone. Over. And all that will be left are images. Will there be any? My hope is that your children live long and healthy lives. I am not trying to be morbid, just realistic.
So, get your camera out. Take pictures. Don't worry about the perfect time--just invest in your kids. Get their pictures done professionally and archive those moments. You will not regret it! I know this has made me realize that I must take my own precious children's pictures more often! I <3 them!!
